Most Spectacular Looks from the 2019 Met Gala "Camp: Notes on Fashion"

Last night, the most fashionable event of the year took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in NYC, and the theme was "Camp". But as you may have already find out if you've scrolled around social media today, it was definitely not about outdoors camping. Inspired by Susan Sontag's essay instead (published back in 1964), it was all about the essence of Camp and "its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration". Or otherwise said it is what the 80s and 90s look like to us nowadays with the huge shoulder pads, blue eyeshadows and big hairdos... I feel lucky to be able to remember these things from my childhood. Add a pinch of kitsch from the drag queens scene like feathers and glitter and that's it. Camp.

To be completely honest, I was not very excited when I first heard what the theme would be. Happily, the designers took a much classier direction than I was envisioning, and it was in fact inspiring. I loved so many of the looks from the pink carpet, it's really hard to pick only ten of them to call favourites, though. But ok, let me try.

1

Janelle Monáe

It is no secret I'm obsessed with this woman, but we all have to admit that Christian Siriano is a creative genius.

This sculptural dress simply screams "pop-art". Oh, and if you haven't seen it, the eyelashes on the bra were moving as the eye was blinking. So much within the theme of the night.

2

Darren Criss

Darren Criss is simply a chameleon.

As we've seen in "American Horror Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace" he can pull off any type of act. And apparently the same applies in fashion. Love this Balmain look on him accentuated with the blue eyeshadow.

3

RuPaul

There's really nothing surprising seeing RuPaul on the pink carpet, except that maybe I would expect him to be wearing a giant wig on an event like this. After all this is the first male artist to nail a make up collaboration with MAC, all the way back in the 90s.

However, this custom Zaldy NYC sequins suit is definitely a drag Queen appropriate.

4

Lady Gaga

Number 4 goes to Lady Gaga and all her 4 outfits.

Camp is not only about dressing up, as it's more about being seen and subsequently - how do you present yourself.

And Lady Gaga's show on the carpet last night was nothing less than spectacular. I wouldn't expect anything else than that from an artist who built her career on theatrical performances and exaggerated outfits.

What a creative collaboration with Brandon Maxwell.

5

Tiffany Haddish

Michael Kors nailed it designing this sequin-zebra-pattern suit while this hilarious lady pulled it off like no one else.

Animal print, bling, feathers. It's all Camp. Even the chicken in her purse (which she brought because, as she said: there's no enough food inside).

6

Dua Lipa

Versace's style has always been "over the top".

And this look, brought to us by the beautiful and talented Dua Lipa is the definition of exaggeration - bright colours and mixing them unexpectedly, different patterns, a giant bow, golden elements, big hairdo...

7

Celine Dion

When you spend years and years doing your own show in Vegas, you can't just appear to the Met Gala wearing whatsoever.

This custom Oscar de la Renta look, inspired by the Ziegfeld Follies, is made out of thousands micro-beaded fringes and weighs around 10kg! Who would tell...

Also, that headpiece is everything.

8

Naomi Campbell

A Pink Goddess!

There's really not much to say here, as Naomi and Valentino brought pink perfection to the pink carpet. And it is Camp with all the million feather on the cape and the pattern-tights.

9

Ryan Murphy

Channeling Liberace, apparently it took 6 weeks for Christian Siriano and his team to create this outstanding cape, but all the work has paid off. This look was outstanding.

10

Kacey Musgraves

I'm a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world...

And if that world isn't Camp, I don't know what it is. Nicely done, Moschino.

Other than these Top 10 looks, I've gathered some more outfits from last night in the gallery bellow. Some of them I love, others not so much, however in one way or another I found them creative, right on point with the theme or simply inspiring, and do believe each one of them deserves their own 5 minutes of fame.
